Conceptual Alternatives

How We Got Here

Providing safe and comfortable multimodal facilities are highly desired by residents and stakeholders, driven by the desire to walk and bike along Washtenaw Avenue. These were confirmed by conversations with the community.

All modes are considered important to the community and providing space for each is important to the corridor functioning properly. The final design on the corridor should complement and enhance the future land use vision for Washtenaw Avenue. Right of way availability is scarce throughout the corridor and the roadway is in need of repair and maintenance.

Washtenaw Avenue Conceptual Alternatives

Five initial design alternatives were developed to illustrate the potential roadway configuration options for Washtenaw Avenue. These alternatives each show a different design theme that meets current roadway design standards. Each alternative includes, at a minimum, continuous pedestrian pathways throughout, improved driving lanes, and enhanced transit stop infrastructure. The study area was split into two segments based on the current traffic levels, land uses, right of way constraints, and community desires. Segment 1 extends from Carpenter Road to Hewitt Road while Segment 2 extends from Hewitt Road to Oakwood Street.

Each alternative consists of design options developed at Golfside Road and Mansfield Street. These two locations were selected based on the current traffic levels in the corridor. Three views for each location are shown in the slides below.

This process aims to understand which alternatives and design components best meet the community's needs. These alternatives will be refined based on the feedback from residents, stakeholders, and other community members.
