ALTERNATIVE E: Additional Transit Lanes

This option has been removed from consideration as it does not meet the Purpose and Need. The excessive amount of right-of-way needed would result in a cost-prohibitive design for Washtenaw Avenue.

Alternative E retains the five existing vehicle travel lanes and adds an outside-running dedicated transit lane on both sides of the street, requiring additional right of way. This alternative would add continuous sidewalks throughout the corridor to ensure that riders can travel safely to and from bus stops. At Mansfield Road, the alternative would transition to three travel lanes and two outside transit lanes, fitting within the existing right-of-way. Additional right-of-way would still be needed to accommodate sidewalk connections.

Pros:

  • Maximum space for all roadway users

  • Dedicated transit lanes to improve transit reliability and travel time

  • Five travel lanes maintain the current traffic capacity

  • Shared use pathway on the north side of the street

Cons:

  • Significant amount of right-of-way needed

  • More costly to construct

  • Increased pedestrian crossing distances

  • No dedicated bicycle facility

  • Not likely to reduce vehicle speeding

  • Design does not meet aesthetic goals for the corridor
